In 2009 Deakin University lecturers Kristy Hess and Lisa Waller co-ordinated the second round of trials of the Reporting Diversity Project journalism curriculum resources.
Five journalism academics from around Australia were recruited to use the materials in their classes during Semester 1 2009. The participants teach across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Media Law and Ethics, Introduction to Journalism, Radio Journalism and Feature Writing. Hess and Waller will conduct interviews with trial participants at the end of the semester to gain their feedback on the resources and to discover how they have been adapted for use. This data will be collated and included on this website to give other journalism academics suggestions about innovative ways they can use the materials in their classrooms.
Hess and Waller have designed an additional research project that involves conducting telephone interviews with a sample of 30 other academics from across Australia’s university journalism programs. This research will determine if they are aware of the Reporting Diversity website and its curriculum resources in particular; and if they have used the materials or would consider using them in future. The results of this research will be presented at the JEA conference in Perth at the end of the year and will be included on this website.
